Agatha Christie's Mystery Potatoes is a recipe which she contributed to the book A Kitchen Goes to War. The subtitle of the book was "Famous People Contribute 150 Recipes to a Ration-Time Cookery Book." This was a book published in 1940 by John Miles which featured 150 recipes contributed by celebrities to help the wartime households avoid food waste, make the best use of rationed food items while still maintaining a varied and nuitritious diet.
Christie's recipe is for a version of baked potatoes and used potatoes, cream and anchovies. The recipe is reprinted in The Curious Cookbook: Viper Soup, Badger Ham, Stewed Sparrows and 100 More Historic Recipes by Peter Ross.[1] The recipe is also read out and demonstrated in episode 4 of the 1993 BBC documentary The Wartime Kitchen and Garden.[2]
