In the novel The Sittaford Mystery, Abdul is the Indian servant of Captain Wyatt. He is described as a tall Indian wearing a turban and often, so it seems to those who meet him, with a melancholy appearance. Part of this could be due to having to put up with the scoldings and grumblings of his bad-tempered employer. In one instance, for example, he is berated severely for failing to position a table at just the right angle. But at least Wyatt seems to appreciate him. He tells Emily Trefusis one of the best things of having a native servant is that they understand orders.
