In the Parker Pyne short story The Pearl of Price, Abbas Effendi is the tour guide who accompanies Parker Pyne's tour group from Amman to Petra. Early in the morning the day after the party reached Petra, he led the group up a narrow path to a high plateau set in the rocks above Petra. This area had been used for scarifices in ancient times. It was the journey to this place that became the source of tension in the group because of a lost earring.
