Synopsis[]

This episode is a fairly faithful adaptation of the original short story but with the insertion of Miss Marple in the plot. Here she takes over some of the role of Captain Haydock.

Comparison with original story[]

(may contain spoilers - click on expand to read)

The adaptation follows the original story quite closely. Miss Marple is inserted into the plot by having her take some of the role of Captain Haydock. Sir Henry is also inserted into the plot. Here, for some reason, he is Inspector Evan's boss--so Evans is not retired. But Inspector Slack and Colonel Melchett are also mentioned but they do not appear. It is not clear what the hierarchy of police roles here is.

Miss Marple is not as sceptical as Captain Haydock and she listens while Evans tells her his suspicions at the beginning of the episode. After seeing Evans, Miss Marple goes to police headquarters on the pretext of wanting to see Colonel Melchett. She tricks her way into being left alone. She sneaks into the computer room and looks up Mrs Merrowdene's background on the computer.

Just like in the original, there is a fete. Evans goes to the fete, here because Sir Henry has asked him to look for Dr Lloyd's missing dog. He encounter the fortune teller Zara who tells his fortune, much like in the original.

The finale takes place much as in the original. Here Miss Marple dashes in with Sir Henry just as Evans drinks his tea. They are too late and he dies. Outside, as Evans's body is taken away, Miss Marple tells Sir Henry her conclusions.
